Leaking UST Unsuspected
Following removal, we discovered that the tank exhibited severe corrosion with multiple visible holes. Heavy petroleum staining was also present along the sides and bottom of the excavation at depths ranging from approximately 4.5 to 7 feet below grade. We collected soil samples to characterize site conditions and evaluate the extent of petroleum impact. In addition, we documented nearby environmental receptors, including groundwater, surface water, and adjacent structures.
After completing the tank closure, we restored the excavation with clean backfill and re-established the lawn. Following its review of the site characterization, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality determined that no further investigation or corrective action was required at that time and formally closed
the case. The agency noted that future action could be required if significant environmental or health concerns develop.
